OCC Course Announcement

The OCC is excited to announce the release of a new and innovative educational pathway designed to enable osteopaths to nurture, develop and enhance their specialist skills in paediatrics. Founded on our well-respected Diploma in Paediatric Osteopathy, this newly developed pathway now includes two stand-alone 1-year courses which can be used to either start your journey in paediatrics or to build upon a journey that has already begun.

The pathway is designed with the flexibility to enable a postgraduate osteopath to structure their own learning journey; either following the courses sequentially and achieving a DPO in 2 years or completing them over a longer period of time.

The OCC Certificate

This one-year course will be a certificate level and will offer osteopaths the opportunity to spend a year developing their obstetric and paediatric clinical skills in the OCC clinic working collaboratively as part of the team. In addition to ongoing coaching and mentoring, there will be weekly tutorials and seminar weekends dedicated to developing osteopathic skills and treatment of the new-born up to the age of two. The course will include common presentations such as neonatal postural adaptations, mechanical assisted birth interventions & strains, plagiocephaly, maternal mental health & bonding, feeding issues, sleep, an appreciation of the developmental milestones, and an introduction to the unwell child.

Prerequisite Certificate LevelOCC Access Course, Osteopathy in the Cranial Field or equivalent

The OCC Diploma in Paediatric Osteopathy (DPO)

For those keen to further deepen their paediatric knowledge, skills, and application, this one-year course will build on the foundations established in the first year and take students to DPO level. Students will be encouraged to debate, discuss & challenge their paediatric & osteopathic thinking in clinic and via seminar weekends, and will be expected to actively participate in the development and discussion with their first year “certificate level” cohort. Alongside another year working in the OCC clinic, students will have the opportunity to observe & treat babies in the Starlight neonatal ward in Barnet Hospital, develop a deeper understanding of the embryology, anatomy & development of a child into puberty and cover topics including prematurity, behavioural issues, the seriously sick child, enuresis, immunity & vaccination, orthodontics, the development of gait & scoliosis, hormonal & skeletal changes and how these impact the growing child and teen.

Prerequisite Diploma in Paediatric Osteopathy (DPO) Level – successful completion of certificate level or other relevant post graduate course with demonstration of appropriate osteopathic skills, knowledge, and supervised clinical experience.

Accreditation of prior post-graduate learning will enable applicants, who have completed other relevant courses, to accelerate their path through one or both OCC courses.

Both courses offer opportunities for osteopaths to fulfil aspects of their GOsC CPD requirements.

As a world recognised learning institution, both courses offer an exciting opportunity for any osteopath looking to learn more about paediatrics within the nurturing clinic environment that is the Osteopathic Centre for Children (OCC).
